Enjoy Our History...Be a Part of Our Future.
Do you golf? Have you been thinking about joining a club? If so, Highland Country Club wants you!
In the world of business, everyone knows it’s location, location, location. And when it comes to the business of golf, no one has a nicer facility with easier access from downtown Pittsburgh than Highland Country Club.
Highland Country Club has a tremendous amount of tradition and history, and for the past 90 years, it has been an important part of the community. Recently, however, the club needed a leadership change to make sure it could survive during these challenging times. In doing so, its members wanted to make sure they chose individuals who would keep the club’s rich tradition alive and maintain the golf course without selling it for development. Their choice was the team of Jeff Cuny and Jeff Garbinski.
“When you take an incredible North Hills suburban location and combine that with a magnificent golf course with a lustrous history...we knew this was a place that we wanted to be a part of,” says co-owner Cuny, who has been in golf course management for over 20 years. It is not easy taking a struggling club and turning it back into a success once again. But if someone can do it, it’s Cuny. Together, he and partner Garbinski, who runs a local management firm, formulated a solid plan to help revitalize this once successful club.
The first step was to take the underutilized restaurant and open it up to the public. “We decided to let the public experience the wonderful foods our chef creates as well as the incredible ambiance of looking out floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the golf course,” says Cuny. The dining room is now known as the Reel House Restaurant, named after the original owner of the land, Casper Reel, who was granted the land in 1792 from William Penn.
It all started with a renovation of the 80-seat dining room this January. They already had an incredible chef in Dino Cillo, who has worked at Highland for the past six years and previously worked for 17 years at the University Club in Oakland. “The location of the club is the key selling point, located minutes from Downtown,” says Cuny. “We've already started the process of corporate memberships. Five minutes, free parking, eat lunch, and get back downtown to work.”
Garbinski and Cuny hope to make the club appeal to a wider range of members while maintaining the strong base that has supported the Highland for years.
Office space will be available for rent to small companies, aided by a central secretary for all the tenants. These small companies will have the option to purchase corporate memberships to take advantage of networking opportunities. In addition, within six months, the Serenity on the Green spa will open on weekends, offering a full range of massages from hot-stone to Swedish and chair massages. Also in the works is a tiki bar by the Olympic-sized pool, where D.J.’s will spin Caribbean tunes and live musicians will entertain members on Friday and Saturday evenings. Comedy Night and other events in the clubhouse will also be open to the public.
Looking for a special place for a special occasion? Highland Country Club’s beautiful facility offers spectacular views and a delicious menu, perfect for making memories that will last a lifetime.
Of course, Highland Country Club’s main draw is its challenging 18-hole golf course. Designed by Emil “Dutch” Loeffler (1894-1948) of Oakmont, the former greenskeeper and professional at Oakmont Country Club, the course features a number of picturesque holes spread across 117 rolling acres. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a weekend duffer, Highland’s golf course is sure to test your skills and provide a wonderful opportunity for outdoor recreation.
