This partnership brings two organizations together to help provide a great service to the golf community. GLM has been hosting casual golf events for many years, so the partnership makes sense. “We are trying to get more people involved in both competitive and casual golf,” says Dan Rieg, owner of the PGT. “Our company has always wanted to expand, and now, with us working closely with GLM, we have the ability to reach a lot more golfers.”
Each company will still work independently but will help support each other in organizing of events, marketing, and attracting new members and players. “Our goal is to help the PGT gain a stronger member base,” says Tom Poljak, publisher of GLM. “Dan Rieg and the entire group at the PGT are wonderful to work with. They help fill a void that we had with our current golf events. Some of our players wanted more competitive golf and some of the PGT members wanted a second event to play in each week, or an occasional casual fun event to participate in.”
The Difference Between the PGT Events and GLM Events
Pittsburgh Golfer's Tour
The main difference between the PGT and GLM is that the PGT is a member-based organization that offers a lot of benefits for its members. The PGT runs competitive events that are open to both men and women and are flighted to ensure fair competition.
- Events are professionally run.
- The PGT hosts about 35 events each year, all of which are governed by USGA rules.
- Players compete for over $175,000 in cash and prizes each year.
- The PGT offers year-long Match Play and Ryder Cup events, individual-net and gross-stroke play, Stableford, team and series competition.
- Entry fees usually range from $80-$100 and include golf with a cart and prizes.
- The National Tour Challenge every fall allows players to compete with other similar groups from across the nation.
- The PGT provides member/guest opportunities and offers a great package of travel and golf discounts for its members.
- We play the best public, private and resort courses around, many of which you might not normally get on.
- PGT is the closest thing an average golfer will get to the feel of the PGA.
- Compete in Flights of other players with similar skill levels only.
- We are the only Pro-Am NET tour that pays in the area.
Golfer's Lifestyle Magazine
A few years ago GLM was fielding hundreds of calls each year from readers who were requesting information on golf events. Most of the requests were from players who simply loved playing in Golf outings but didn’t really know of anyone hosting an event or simply could not afford to pay over $100 to play in the various charity or social events. GLM decided to start hosting casual and fun events at a reasonable rate to fill a golf void in western Pennsylvania. GLM’s events, like the PGT, are open to both men and women.
- GLM hosts a variety of events: Four- and –two-person scrambles and shambles, two-person better ball, skins, the annual father and son event, and ladies-only events.
- GLM gives trophies and prizes to the winners of each event.
- There is usually a skill prize on every hole, depending on the amount of players in the field. The main sponsors for the 2010 season are Dick’s Sporting Goods, Primanti Bros, and LeWay Enterprise.
- Most events include a hot dog at the turn and dinner after the event, and all events are usually priced between $49 and $59 dollars, depending on the course.
“We take a lot of pride in offering incredible events at reasonable prices,” says Poljak. The events have proven quite popular with a wide range of players. Most events are on Saturdays with some interesting events on weekdays. Poljak said that they were working on a three-event package with Highland Country Club on Fridays, which they will be announcing soon, and he is also thinking of a six-player scramble for a large cash prize to mix things up a bit later this year.
One thing’s for sure, both the PGT and GLM are well respected in the golf community. Now, with the two working together, they can help service the needs of a lot of golfers in our region who enjoy playing in both casual and competitive events.
“We’ve been tossing around for years the possibly of adding a second event each week, and now we have a partner that will help us with that,” adds Rieg. “Most of our events are on Sundays, and with GLM having most of their events on Saturdays, it gives both groups the ability to experience the benefits of what the other has to offer.”
GLM has a database of well over 10,000 members. That and the fact that the PGT has built a strong following of members since its inception in 1995, make this group the go-to organization for both competitive and casual events in this region.
