In addition to claiming the title of “Friendliest Staff,” Birdsfoot also received top honors for its No. 2 and No. 12 holes. The course further showcased its charm by finishing as a runner-up in the highly competitive and fun category of “Best Hotdog.” Travis expressed enthusiasm about this category, stating he aims to win it next year.
The golf course derives its name from the birdsfoot trefoil, a lush ground cover adorned with small yellow flowers that flourishes throughout the property. This resilient plant, belonging to the pea family, is aptly named for its seed pods that resemble a bird’s foot.
Birdsfoot Golf Course is situated on a portion of Buffalo Creek Farms, once owned by the late Alexander H. Lindsay and his wife, Betty G. Lindsay. Alexander was not only a practicing attorney but also an active civic leader who promoted initiatives like the Allegheny Valley Expressway. A farmer with a passion for agronomy, he preferred birdsfoot trefoil for hay production due to its high quality and perennial nature, lasting well beyond the typical lifespan of other forage crops.
In the late 1950s, Mr. Lindsay planted thirteen acres that now encompass the third and fourth holes of the course. This crop thrived for over two decades, with remnants of the original hay field still visible today. Hay was transported across the farm to a barn that once stood where the eighteenth green now resides. Over the years, seeds from the hay wagons left a trail of vibrant yellow flowers stretching from the hayfield to the barn.
Despite its delicate appearance, birdsfoot trefoil is a hearty and resilient plant. It invites golfers to walk, drive, and even hack their way through it without hesitation, so feel free to enjoy the unique features it offers!
The whimsical name “Birdsfoot” perfectly hints at the delightful experience awaiting golfers at this Freeport gem. Unlike many other courses that may pulse with pretense, Birdsfoot prides itself on its friendly atmosphere and excellent golf that caters to players of all skill levels.
The course features 18 distinct holes, including four of the area’s most challenging par 3s, attracting golfers from across the tri-state area. Its links-style holes on the front nine seamlessly blend with the parkland beauty of the rolling hills, creating an unpredictable and exciting golfing experience.
The scenery remains untouched by residential developments, except for the charming clubhouse, an old family farmhouse that looks as if it were a holdover from a different era.
Adding to the course’s charm, a local artist had been commissioned to carve whimsical “Bogeymen” into the gnarled bark of trees lining the cart path. Grim-faced yet unblinking, these carvings might just be the only non-smiling faces you’ll encounter at Birdsfoot.
