Congratulations to Pittsburgh Field Club: A Celebration of Excellence at the Western Pennsylvania Golf Choice Awards

The Pittsburgh Field Club has proudly claimed the Best of the Best awards for Holes No. 7 and 15, along with the coveted title of Best Fairways. Additionally, the club garnered impressive runner-up recognition in two other categories within the private division at the Western Pennsylvania Golf Choice Awards. These accolades are a testament to the club’s dedication to maintaining its storied history and traditions while continually enhancing the golfing experience for its members.

Founded in 1882 as the Pittsburgh Cricket Club, the organization originally focused solely on cricket until 1895 when golf was introduced by John Moorehead Jr. This led to the construction of three rudimentary golf holes, marking the beginning of a legacy that would evolve into today’s acclaimed golf course. By 1896, the club officially transformed into the Pittsburgh Field Club, chartered to be a country club emphasizing both recreation and social engagement.

After relocating in 1914 due to lease termination by landowner Henry Clay Frick, the club purchased 171 acres where it stands today. Under the expert guidance of Alexander H. Findlay, often referred to as the “Father of American Golf,” the golf course was completed in June 1915, coinciding with the grand opening of the original clubhouse. Although the clubhouse tragically burned down in 1924, a new one was quickly constructed and remains a centerpiece of the club’s identity.

Throughout its rich history, the Pittsburgh Field Club has offered an array of sports, including swimming, tennis, skeet shooting, and more, alongside its beloved golf. The golf course has undergone various modifications over the years, featuring designs from legendary architects like Donald Ross and A.W. Tillinghast, ensuring a dynamic playing experience that honors the club’s legacy.

The club has also hosted numerous prestigious championships, including the 1937 PGA Championship, where Denny Shute defended his title, and qualifying rounds for the US Open and Western Open. These events have solidified the Pittsburgh Field Club’s reputation as a premier destination for championship golf.

Notably, the original 18th hole posed significant challenges for players due to its severe uphill climb. To enhance accessibility, an elevator was installed beside the 17th green in 1938, allowing golfers to easily reach the 18th tee. This unique feature continues to serve thousands of golfers annually, embodying the club’s commitment to innovation and member experience.

Congratulations once again to the Pittsburgh Field Club for its outstanding achievements at the Western Pennsylvania Golf Choice Awards! These honors reflect the dedication of the club’s members and leadership to preserving its traditions while embracing the future of golf.
