Ponderosa Golf Course has made quite an impact in the inaugural Western Pennsylvania Golf Choice Awards, winning for Best Hole No. 5 and Best Hotdog! Although I haven’t had the pleasure of playing at Ponderosa in many years (or even tasted their famed hotdog) I can see why golfers in Western PA have showered this course with votes. The community clearly loves the food operation at this family-owned gem, and it has piqued my interest. I can’t wait until next spring to visit for a hearty meal with “a side” of golf!
Let me introduce you to Matt Heinlein, a key figure in this success story. The Heinlein family established Ponderosa Golf Course in 1965, inspired by the beloved TV show “Bonanza,” where the family ranch was called Ponderosa. It’s a fitting tribute, as this 250-acre golf course has become a cherished destination in the region. Matt currently runs the golf operation at this friendly place to play golf and have a great meal.

I peeked into the bar on my visit to take a photo of Matt with his awards. It’s one of those golf course bars that simply screams “get in here and have a drink” after a round of golf. In all of my years of visiting golf courses from all over the world this one ranks up there with one of the most inviting atmospheres as it pertains to the food and beverage operations. A true testament to Matt and his family for giving off that great vibe.
