Congratulations to Fox Chapel Golf Club for winning the Best of the Best awards for Best Layout and Best Half-Way House at the Western Pennsylvania Golf Choice Awards for private golf courses!
I must admit, I was a bit surprised that Fox Chapel didn’t win more awards. This is one of my favorite golf courses in the world, and I don’t use those words lightly. From the moment you park, the club exudes an incredible vibe. It truly is a special place. I have fond memories of nearly making a hole-in-one on hole No. 7 (par-4) about 15 years ago, which makes this course even dearer to me. I always appreciate an invitation to play here.
Fox Chapel Golf Club boasts a classic design by Seth Raynor and Charles Banks, commissioned in 1923. Raynor, a renowned golf course architect, aimed to create a layout that was not only enjoyable but also challenging for its members. His reputation was built on his work at iconic courses like Fishers Island, National Golf Links of America, and Chicago Golf Club. In traditional Raynor fashion, the course reflects the best golf holes from Europe, following the vision of his mentor, Charles Blair MacDonald.
Raynor designed over 75 courses, but sadly passed away before Fox Chapel was completed. His protégé, Charles Banks, finished the remaining holes, resulting in a layout that features open fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and elevated greens. The course is renowned for its challenging putting surfaces and the unique character provided by its landscape. While some bunkers have been replaced with trees over the years, the original charm remains intact, enhanced by a historical barn near the 13th tee.
In 2001, course architect Brian Silva was commissioned to restore Fox Chapel to its original Raynor layout. His work on the bunkering has become a standout feature of the course, known for its vertical faces and steep inclines.
Fox Chapel Golf Club has a proud history of hosting prestigious tournaments, including the Curtis Cup, the Women’s U.S. Amateur, and numerous amateur events such as the Pennsylvania Amateur and Open. In 2012, the club made its mark on the professional stage by hosting the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship, a first for Fox Chapel, which received such positive feedback that it returned for two more years.
The club’s instructional program caters to players of all levels, offering private lessons, group instruction, and on-course skill management. Members enjoy flexible tee times and can play at their convenience, whether walking with caddies, using golf carts, or carrying their own bags.
Fox Chapel Golf Shop is a golfer’s paradise, featuring top-quality clubs, apparel, and accessories from leading brands. The knowledgeable staff provides expert advice and personalized service, helping members make informed choices about their equipment and game improvement.
